Chakras

Chakras are basically energy centres located within and around your body. The word "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" and these are how chakras are depicted - as spinning wheels that help move the energy around your body freely.

Everything in the Universe is made up of energy so these chakra wheels just help with the ebb and flow of the energy flowing around our body.

Although there are lots of chakras - below are the 7 main ones and their properties.

Root Chakra - (Muladhara)

Location : Base of Spine

Colour : Red

Crystals : Red Jasper / Red Coral / Bloodstone / Obsidian / Hematite

Scents : Bergamot / Cedar Wood / Patchouli / Black Pepper

Properties : Survival / Grounding / Stability

Mantra : I am safe. I am stable. I am secure.

When the root chakra is open, we feel confident in our ability to withstand challenges and stand on our own two feet.

When it's blocked, we feel threatened, as if we're standing on unstable ground and it can manifest physically with arthritis, constipation, and bladder/colon problems. On an emotional level a blocked root chakra will make you feel insecure about finances or our basic needs and well-being.

Sacral Chakra - (Swadhisthana)

Location : Below Naval, Above Pubic Bone

Colour : Orange

Crystals : Dark Amber / Carnelian / Garnet / Tiger's Eye / Yellow Jasper

Scents : Ylang Ylang / Gardenia / Neroli / Orange

Properties : Primal Instinct / Sensuality / Pleasure / Creativity / Sexuality

Mantra : I have everything I desire.

When the sacral chakra is open, we feel very creative and in touch with our desires and requirements. We are confident in ourselves and our abilities and very in tune with our emotions.

When it's blocked, we feel like we have low self-esteem or self-worth - especially around pleasure, sexuality, and creativity. Physically this can manifest with urinary tract infections, lower back pain, and impotency.

Solar Plexus Chakra - (Manipura)

Location : Above Naval, Below Ribcage

Colour : Yellow

Crystals : Citrine / Amber / Gold Tiger's Eye / Topaz / Fire Opal

Scents : Lemon / Grapefruit / Lemongrass / Clove

Properties : Self Control / Personal Power / Joy / Inner Harmony / Self Acceptance

Mantra : I create my own reality. I am a powerful energy being.

When the solar plexus chakra is open, we feel very in sync with ourselves and a contentment within our soul and inner being of happiness and gratitude. We feel powerful and in control of our circumstances and situations.

When it's blocked, we feel like we are quite depressed or down and that everything around is chaotic and we have no control over our environment or feelings. Physically this can manifest with issues like ulcers, heartburn, eating disorders, and indigestion.

Heart Chakra - (Anahata)

Location : Centre of Chest

Colour : Green

Crystals : Jade/ Rose Quartz / Malachite / Amazonite / Green Opal

Scents : Geranium / Rose / Cypress / Jasmine

Properties : Unconditional Love / Compassion / Transformation/ Healing / Self Love

Mantra : I am Love. I am Loved. It is safe for me to love and be loved.

When the heart chakra is open, we feel very connected to others but more importantly, to ourselves. We understand the importance of self love without feeling it is selfish. We can easily feel compassion for others and for ourselves.

When people have blocks in the heart chakra they will often put others first, to their own detriment. They will often feel lonely, insecure, and isolated. Others may be closed off and not wanting to open up to being vulnerable as they fear it could hurt them. Physically blocks in this chakra manifest through heart problems, asthma, and weight issues but it is mainly seen through the emotional symptoms.

Throat Chakra - (Vishuddha)

Location : Throat

Colour : Blue

Crystals : Aquamarine / Turquoise / Blue Howlite / Blue Lace Agate / Kyanite

Scents : Chamomile / Eucalyptus / Tea Tree / Sage

Properties : Communication / Independence / Freedom / Expression / Truth

Mantra : I speak my truth. I speak with love, compassion and clarity.

When the throat chakra is open, we speak and listen with compassion. We also feel confident communicating with others, even through conflict, because you know you are being true to yourself and speaking from your heart and through your own truth.

When this chakra is blocked people will speak over others, will dominate conversations, gossip, speak without thinking, or on the other side of the spectrum they may have trouble speaking their mind or voicing their concerns or opinions. Physically this will manifest through issues in the vocal / throat area as well as any problems with teeth, gums, and mouth.

Third Eye Chakra - (Ajna)

Location : In between Eyebrows

Colour : Indigo

Crystals : Lapis Lazuli / Sapphire / Sodalite / Azurite / Obsidian

Scents : Sandalwood / Star Anise / Mint / Rosemary

Properties : Intuition / Manifestation / Imagination / Clairvoyance / Peace of Mind

Mantra : I trust my intuition and listen to my inner voice.

When the third eye chakra is open, people are very intuitive - they have a sense of knowing and they trust themselves completely as they are in tune with their inner knowing. They can see the bigger picture and always follow their intuition.

Third Eye chakra blocks will present itself as headaches, issues with sight or concentration, and hearing problems. People who are not in touch with their intuition, have trouble listening and who seem to “know it all” usually have blocks in this chakra as this chakra is all to do with wisdom and knowing but without the air of arrogance.

Crown Chakra - (Sahasrara)

Location : Top of Head

Colour : Purple

Crystals : Amethyst / Moonstone / Clear Quartz / Howlite / Selenite

Scents : Frankincense / Lavender / Rosewood / Myrrh

Properties : Enlightenment / Bliss / Divine Wisdom / Understanding /

Universal Consciousness

Mantra : I am a Divine Being. I am connected to Universal Consciousness & Energy

When the crown chakra is open you feel an overall sense of well-being, understanding, one-ness, bliss and harmony. This chakra also helps to keep all the other chakras open and to bring the person towards enlightenment.

Crown chakra blocks will present itself physically through problems with the nervous system, migraines, overall discomfort and illness as this chakra is linked to all the other chakras. On an emotional level someone with a blocked crown chakra may display signs of being narrow-minded, skeptical, or stubborn.
